Hill City Overview

Hill City, located 26 miles southwest of Rapid City, is known as the “Heart of the Hills”, which is derived from its close proximity to both the geographical center of the Black Hills and the local tourist destinations. Hill City has its roots in the Black Hills gold rush but today is the center for the arts and culture in the area.
Rich in history, small in size and big on hospitality and events, Hill City is a favorite destination of active families and couples, empty nesters and “bucket listers” alike! At 4,974’ elevation, you’re just minutes away from the jaw-dropping views from Black Elk peak (7,242’ elev.), or the spectacular beauty of the Cathedral Spires and the grandeur of Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. Take winding roads through pine-scented Ponderosa forests, see the roaming buffalo in Custer State Park or experience the thrill of hiking, biking, horseback-riding, rock-climbing in the area known as “The Heart of the Hills.”
After a day of recreating, take in the warmth and culture offered by Hill City’s art galleries, gift and boutique shops, museums, antique shops and more that line our walkable-shopable little town….or indulge in some of the area’s finest restaurants, wineries and breweries. That’s your journey–elevated–in Hill City, The Heart of the Black Hills.
