The Shoals Overview
The area of northwestern Alabama known as The Shoals is home to several well-known Alabama attractions. Tuscumbia is Helen Keller’s birthplace and home, Sheffield is home to the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and Florence is a beautiful river city with a rich history. There is also a wide variety of outdoor recreation to enjoy at Pickwick Lake, Wheeler Lake, Wilson Lake and Coldwater Falls.
Florence
Downtown Florence is a vibrant area with walkable streets and plenty of inspiring things to do. Spend the day getting to know the local community by exploring our shops, restaurants, and historical attractions. When it happens in the Shoals, chances are it happens in downtown Florence. This is where the whole community comes out to play. Don’t miss First Fridays, a chance to connect with local artists and enjoy food and live music on our downtown streets. Many of the area’s most popular events happen downtown too, from Shindig to the W.C. Handy Music Festival, the Renaissance Faire, and more.
Muscle Shoals
Known for its FAME Studios, Muscle Shoals has made several contributions to popular music. Located in northwestern Alabama in The Shoals area, this city has a population of more than 12,000. It has become known as the fastest-growing city in northwest Alabama. Only about 30 miles south of Tennessee and 20 miles east of Mississippi, this city is rich in culture.
Sheffield
Sheffield, Alabama, known as the “Center of the Shoals,” is centrally located between the cities of Florence, Muscle Shoals, and Tuscumbia in the northwest region of Alabama. Sheffield has a population of more than 9,000. The town is also home to the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and Helen Keller Hospital. Sheffield features three historic districts with Antebellum and Victorian-era buildings. The rich music heritage goes back to the 1950’s when new fad Rock n’ Roll music began to sweep the nation and the roots of Jazz were being established as an American tradition. Many top songwriters and performers cut vinyl at Jackson Highway Studio and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio.
Tuscumbia
Situated along the meandering Tennessee River at the base of the foothills of the Appalachians is a region ablaze with beauty, bustling activity, rich heritage and distinctive cities. One of these is Tuscumbia, which is home to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Valley Art Center, the Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard and Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller.
