San Francisco Bay Area

San Francisco Bay Area Overview

The San Francisco Bay Area is a region in Northern California spanning the city of San Francisco and surrounding counties. Located in Northern California at the state’s distinctive bend in the coast, the region has an alluring magic that stretches beyond the bay to diverse cities with nightlife and trend-setting cuisine.

On a peninsula, hilly San Francisco is known for its crimson bridge, cable cars, a sparkling bay, and streets lined with elegant Victorian homes—It’s undeniably one of the world’s great cities.

The Bay Area is also home to some of the world’s finest wine country, including Napa Valley and Sonoma, plus waterfront towns, dramatic beaches, and the tech-savvy southern end of the bay known as the Silicon Valley.

The Main Bay Regions

San Francisco

The de facto centre and the iconic city of the region, home to such landmarks as the Golden Gate Bridge, the hilly streets with their famous cable cars and Victorian houses, the infamous island prison of Alcatraz, and enough museums and intriguing neighbourhoods to keep a traveller exploring for days.

North Bay

Across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, this area includes Sonoma and Napa, and is home to some incredible natural scenery, including the old-growth redwood forest of Muir Woods and the scenic stretch of coastline at Point Reyes, as well as the famed wine-growing region of Napa Valley.

East Bay

Across the bay from San Francisco, this is an intensely developed area wedged between the bay and a ridge of mountains to the east. Oakland is the most populous city in this region, with the college town of Berkeley being another major destination.
