Start your journey with two nights in Las Vegas, Nevada’s glittering gateway city. While known for its neon lights and non-stop energy, Las Vegas is also a surprisingly convenient base for outdoor adventure. Use your time here to relax after your flight, take in a show, or enjoy a meal at one of the city’s top restaurants before your road trip begins.

Collect your rental vehicle and leave the city behind as you head northeast toward Moapa Valley for a night close to some of Nevada’s most iconic scenery. Your first stop is Valley of Fire State Park, where fiery red sandstone formations, ancient petroglyphs, and sweeping desert vistas make it one of the most photogenic places in the state. Hike the White Domes Trail or take a scenic drive through the park's signature red rock canyons.

Just beyond Valley of Fire lies the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, where the Colorado River has carved dramatic desert canyons and created vast stretches of sparkling blue water. Today you’ll journey north along the Great Basin Highway, one of Nevada’s most scenic drives, en route to the historic railroad town of Ely, where you’ll spend the next three nights. Along the way, stop at Kershaw-Ryan State Park, a lush canyon oasis perfect for a short walk, and Cathedral Gorge State Park, known for its narrow slot canyons and unique spire-like formations that look like something from another planet.

Arrive in Ely by late afternoon and settle into this charming mountain town surrounded by open wilderness.

Use Ely as your base to explore some of eastern Nevada’s best parks. Don’t miss Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park, home to a collection of beehive-shaped ovens once used to produce charcoal for silver smelting—an eerie and photogenic step back in time.

Next, venture into the rugged terrain of Cave Lake State Park, where you can hike, picnic, or fish in a peaceful alpine setting. For a full day adventure, head to Great Basin National Park, one of the state’s natural crown jewels. Hike the Lehman Caves, marvel at 5,000-year-old bristlecone pines, or take on the challenge of Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive. This park is also a designated International Dark Sky Park, making it a top destination for stargazing.

Continue west along the Loneliest Road in America (US Route 50), a legendary highway famed for its solitude, sweeping desert views, and authentic slice of Americana. Along the way, pause in Austin, a historic mining town tucked into the Toiyabe Mountains. Wander its quiet streets, visit Stokes Castle for a glimpse of frontier history, or step inside century-old churches that still stand as testaments to the town’s boom days.

Farther west, stop at the iconic Middlegate Station — a remote roadhouse and true Nevada original. Known for its rustic charm, hearty burgers, and eclectic atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to refuel and soak up the spirit of the open road.

Your day ends in Fallon, where small-town warmth meets wide-open desert. Rest up here and prepare for the next stretch of your Nevada journey.

Arrive in the stunning Lake Tahoe region for a three-night stay surrounded by sparkling alpine waters and pine-clad peaks. Explore Sand Harbor State Park, where you can swim or paddle in the crystal-clear lake; hike through the forest at Spooner Lake & Backcountry; enjoy panoramic views at Cave Rock; and visit Van Sickle Bi-State Park, which straddles the Nevada–California border and offers scenic trails perfect for hiking or mountain biking.

This is also your chance to drive the Lake Tahoe Loop, a spectacular circuit that wraps around the lake’s shoreline and reveals jaw-dropping views at every turn.

Hit the road again as you travel along the Free-Range Art Highway—a surreal route dotted with desert art and ghost town oddities. Make your way to Tonopah, once a booming silver town and now one of Nevada’s quirkiest desert outposts.

While here, take a day trip to Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, where a well-preserved ghost town and the fossilized remains of ancient marine reptiles create a one-of-a-kind blend of history and prehistory. At night, enjoy some of the darkest skies in the country—perfect for stargazing.

As your journey begins to wind down, head south along the Free-Range Art Highway, where the drive is as memorable as the destination. En route to Pahrump, you’ll pass through a string of quirky ghost towns and offbeat desert attractions—reminders of Nevada’s artistic spirit and Wild West past. This stretch offers a chance to pause, snap some photos, and soak up the eccentric charm that defines this part of the state.

Settle in for two nights in Pahrump, a quiet desert town that serves as the perfect base for exploring nearby natural wonders. On your second day, venture into Death Valley National Park, a place of astonishing extremes. Walk across vast salt flats, climb windswept sand dunes, peer into colourful badlands, and marvel at ancient geological formations—this otherworldly landscape is both harsh and hauntingly beautiful.

Before your road trip comes to an end, take the scenic route back to Las Vegas, with a final stop at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. Tucked beneath the towering red cliffs of Red Rock Canyon, this peaceful spot offers a surprising contrast to the desert’s ruggedness—lush meadows, historic ranch buildings, and easy walking trails make it a relaxing final chapter to your adventure.
