Introduction

Follow in the footsteps of visionaries on The Way of the American Genius, a richly immersive journey through Missouri that celebrates the people, places, and ideas that helped shape American culture. Beginning in vibrant St. Louis and travelling through historic river towns and heartland communities to Kansas City’s world-famous jazz and barbecue scene, this thoughtfully paced itinerary connects the legacies of Mark Twain, Walt Disney, Scott Joplin, J. C. Penney, and the daring riders of the Pony Express. Along the way, guests will experience iconic landmarks, engaging museums, live music, and authentic small-town charm, offering a deeper understanding of creativity, entrepreneurship, and frontier spirit in the American Midwest.

Designed for curious travellers who enjoy meaningful storytelling as much as memorable sights, this 10-day holiday blends cultural discovery with relaxed exploration and scenic drives. With opportunities to extend the journey along historic Route 66, return to St. Louis, or unwind in the natural beauty of the Ozarks, The Way of the American Genius provides both inspiration and flexibility—an unforgettable celebration of American imagination set against Missouri’s welcoming landscapes.

Day 1: Arrival in St. Louis

After arriving in St. Louis, collect your rental car and head to your hotel for a 3-night stay. We recommend keeping the evening relaxed - consider a casual dinner nearby and a gentle riverside stroll to enjoy first impressions of the Mississippi River and the city skyline.

Day 2: Icons of St. Louis

Enjoy a full day discovering the cultural and historical highlights of St. Louis, beginning with an included 90-minute narrated trolley tour that provides the perfect introduction to the city. Travelling aboard a vehicle styled as a 19th-century trolley, clients will gain helpful orientation and insight to help decide what to explore next. After the tour, perhaps visit Scott Joplin House State Historic Site to learn about the life and legacy of the “King of Ragtime,” or spend the afternoon touring the Anheuser-Busch Brewery for a behind-the-scenes look at one of America’s most famous brewing traditions, with an optional tasting for those who wish. The evening is at leisure for dining in one of the city’s vibrant neighbourhoods.

Day 3: St. Louis Music, Culture & Local Spirit

Begin the day with an included small-group walking tour of St. Louis featuring entrance to the iconic Gateway Arch, where clients can learn about the city’s role in westward expansion while enjoying unforgettable views from the top. After this immersive introduction, continue exploring the city’s cultural scene with a visit to the National Blues Museum to discover St. Louis’ deep musical heritage. Day 5: Marceline & the Roots of Walt Disney

Journey onward to Marceline, the small town that helped shape Walt Disney’s imagination. Visit the Walt Disney Hometown Museum to learn about his childhood years and creative beginnings. Walk through Marceline’s charming downtown, which inspired Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Continue onward for overnight accommodations in preparation for the next day’s drive.

Day 6: Chillicothe & Hamilton: From Sliced Bread to Retail Legacy

Travel via Chillicothe, proudly known as the home of sliced bread—an iconic American innovation. Continue to Hamilton to discover the early story of entrepreneur J. C. Penney. Visit the J. C. Penney Museum to learn how this small town played a role in launching one of America’s most recognizable retail names. Overnight in the region.

Also explore the Patee House Museum and the Jesse James Home Museum for insight into 19th-century life and folklore. Overnight in St. Joseph or Kansas City.

Day 8: Arrival in Kansas City

Travel to Kansas City for a two-night stay. Begin with a visit to the Steamboat Arabia Museum to see remarkably preserved artifacts from a sunken 19th-century riverboat. Enjoy classic Kansas City barbecue for dinner and, if available, attend a live jazz performance in the evening.
