Sundance Overview

Nestled under the shadow of majestic Sundance Mountain is the delightful town of Sundance. The name relates to the history of the mountain, for it was this place Native Americans called Wi Wacippi Paha (temple of the Sioux) where they held their councils and performed their religious ceremonies.

One of the most notorious outlaws inherited his name from this quaint town when he was jailed for stealing horses from a local ranch.  He later met up with his pal Butch Cassidy and thus became, the Wild Bunch Gang.

Sundance is a relatively quiet, inland town throughout the winter months; but when summer arrives, it awakens from its dormancy to greet its many tourists passing through on their way to Devils Tower and Yellowstone National Park.

Recreational opportunities abound in the Bear Lodge Mountains surrounding Sundance, including mountain biking, hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting.
